Online Roundtable: Enforcement of EU Digital Regulation: Reflections on the Commission’s Simplification Agenda

On Thursday, 10 July 2025, we hosted an online roundtable dedicated to a topic of increasing relevance within the European digital policy landscape: the enforcement of EU digital regulation in light of the European Commission’s Simplification Agenda.

Don’t miss the chance to revisit the thought-provoking conversation from this key roundtable—click here to watch.: https://youtu.be/BbhmFCpgRI4?si=LCcfEdgJ_9WFw5US.

In recent years, the European Union has introduced a series of ambitious regulatory frameworks aimed at governing the digital environment — from data protection and AI to platform regulation and cybersecurity. As these rules begin to take shape in practice, attention is shifting towards the complex issue of enforcement. At the same time, the European Commission has been pursuing its Simplification Agenda, a policy initiative intended to streamline regulatory processes and reduce administrative burdens. This raises important questions about how simplification measures might affect the practical enforcement of digital regulation, the coherence of legal frameworks, and the protection of fundamental rights.

We were delighted to welcome a distinguished panel of speakers for this conversation:

  • Paul Nemitz, former Principal Advisor, European Commission

  • Hielke Hijmans, Director, Belgian Data Protection Authority

  • Lisette Mustert, Assistant Professor, Utrecht University School of Law

The session was chaired by Simona Demkova and Giovanni De Gregorio.
