Fundamental Rights in peril: FRA’s Fundamental Rights Report 2025 on democracy, discrimination, and digital threats

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) has released its 2025 Fundamental Rights Report, highlighting serious threats to human rights across the EU in 2024. The report cites alarming issues such as electoral manipulation, gender-based violence, widespread hate speech, and abuse of migrants, emphasizing the need for urgent action by EU institutions and Member States. Key concerns include the role of disinformation and AI in undermining elections, high rates of violence against women, and rising discrimination against minorities including Muslims, Jews, Black people, and LGBTIQ individuals. Despite new policies like the Digital Services Act and AI Act, enforcement remains a challenge, and institutional racism, especially in policing, continues to erode public trust. Socioeconomic inequality, driven by the cost of living and energy prices, further exacerbates the exclusion of vulnerable communities. The FRA calls for stronger protections of fundamental rights, including safer elections, better support for victims of violence, humane migration practices, and more effective digital rights enforcement.
